The UFC returned to Texas on Saturday with Fight Night 94. The event was the promotion's debut showing in Hidalgo, and the UFC aimed to leave a strong impression with a pair of high-stakes bouts at the top of the card.
A battle between Dustin Poirier and Michael Johnson would determine who moved forward in the lightweight title hunt, while surging middleweights Uriah Hall and Derek Brunson squared off to see who would move up in the competitive rankings in the 185-pound division.
First up in the co-main event the North Carolina native Brunson put his four-fight winning streak on the line against Hall--a fighter who is widely considered to be one of the most dangerous strikers in the middleweight fold. Many figured Brunson would have to take the fight to the canvas to find victory, but the Jackson/Winkeljohn fighter decided to travel a different route.
Brunson landed a clean left hand that crumpled Hall to the mat, then pounced on his opponent with ground and pound until referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight. Hall popped right back up to his feet and contested the stoppage, but the damage was already done and Brunson secured his fifth consecutive victory inside the Octagon.
Although Brunson's call for the next title shot won't materialize, he certainly put himself in position to face one of the divisional elite in his next outing.
There was a lot of heat built up between Poirier and Johnson heading into their main event bout at Fight Night 94.
With each being from rival camps and both eager to enter the lightweight title picture, there was no doubt it was going to be an all-out scrap. Poirier was looking to extend his four-fight winning while Johnson was determined to snap a two-fight skid. And once the leather started to fly, it was "The Menace" who stole the show.
Johnson's speed was the deciding factor as he caught the Louisiana native with a right hook followed by a left hand that put Poirier on the canvas. The Team Blackzilians fighter instantly pounced on his opponent and pounded out the stoppage. With the win, Johnson will put himself back into the mix in the upper tier of the 155-pound division, and will absolutely get a big name for his next go.
