The lead up to UFC 239 has been anything but conventional when it comes to its media tour, especially as that relates to promoting one of the newest stars of the organization. Twice “Funky” Ben Askren has taken to the stage with no opponent in sight.

Jack Hermansson openly stated it before he went in to face Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza: He wanted to grapple with the very best and show that he could handle it. Ian Heinisch said as much when he faced Antonio Carlos Junior. Both men stepped into the belly of the beast and came out the other side victorious. 

Frank Camacho holds the distinction of being just one of three fighters to start their UFC career with three straight Fight of the Night bonuses. Justin Gaethje and Yoshihiro Akiyama are the others. It seems like every fight Camacho's in becomes a knock-em-down, drag-em-out brawl. But according to Camacho, that is not necessarily by design. 

With Neil Magny's withdrawal coming just days before his UFC Rochester co-main event bout against Vicente Luque, the promotion was scrambling for a welterweight to save the day. They didn't have to look any further than Derrick Krantz.

It’s no secret that Tyron Woodley isn’t getting any younger. At 36 years old (he turns 37 in April), Woodley is the second oldest champion in the UFC, with only soon-to-be-40-year-old Daniel Cormier as his senior. Despite that fact, Woodley doesn’t seem to be slowing down. His recent performances against Demian Maia and Darren Till were convincing, dominant wins. 

It’s easy to find success stories of fighters going up in weight classes these days. The middleweight title is owned by a man who previously fought at welterweight, and half of the interim title picture in that division can say the same. Thiago Santos has moved up to light heavyweight and instantly found himself in the top 10. 

The welterweight division has quietly become one of the most stacked weight classes in the UFC. Not only is there an abundance of challengers at the top waiting for the next crack at champion Tyron Woodley, but there are a number of worthy fighters just on the cusp of getting that number next to their name. 

Max Griffin didn’t exactly have the best time in Fortaleza, Brazil. Despite nearly finishing Thiago Alves when the bell sounded in the first and spending large portions of the third round in top control, the judges saw the UFC Fight Night 144 bout in favor of Alves, who just so happens to be from Fortaleza.

Just this week, UFC President Dana White came out and said a title fight featuring Kamaru Usman may be next for the welterweight division. While not everything White says can be taken as fact, the statement definitely comes at the expense of former (current?) interim champion Colby Covington.
