There was middleweight gold on the line when David Punch and reigning champion Shane Sobnosky stepped in to do battle in the main event at Cage Combat 30 on Friday night.
It was a matchup of an undefeated prospect against an opponent with three times the experience, but one that ultimately showcased two of the up-and-coming talents the upstart promotion had to offer. The winner would get burst of momentum to move toward the professional ranks, and it was Punch in a hard-fought affair.
Punch came out looking to exchange but Sobnosky wasted no time taking the fight to the canvas. The champion would reach mount late in the opening round, then repeat the process throughout the fight and appeared en route to a clear victory on the judges' cards.
Punch struggled to find his range early, but his grappling and constant pressure offset Sobnosky's dominated position. The end result saw Punch take the victory and dethrone a tough champion en route to winning middleweight gold.
