Floyd Mayweather stops Conor McGregor in the tenth round of their super fight in Las Vegas.
Anytime two of the biggest stars in combat sports step in to do battle there is going to be a ton of hyperbole attached in the build-up, but by the time Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor squared off on Saturday night, the time for inventive storylines was over.
The bout was billed as the biggest fight in the history of combat sports in the lead up, and the two month approach to fight night certainly echoed that sentiment. Intense media focus and massive mainstream appeal made the tilt between boxing's pound-for-pound great and the UFC's biggest star a can't miss affair.
There were so many questions on the table which begged to be answered on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Was Mayweather's age and two years away from the sport enough to slow the future Hall of Famer just enough for the hungry Irish animal to catch him? And on the flip side, could McGregor's unbreakable self-confidence and power to will greatness into existence going to extend impossible odds?
Sport and spectacle alike were on display when the two fighters touched gloves and it was Mayweather that held all the answers when it was all said and done.
While McGregor came out guns blazing and took the early frames, it was "Money" Mayweather whose patience paid off. The boxing great pinged and dinged up the MMA fighter up on the regular after the fourth round and used his constant pressure to keep the Irishman on the defense. McGregor's gas tank was zapped after eight and Mayweather started to tee off in recognition.
Coming into the tenth it wasn't clear what McGregor had left, and Mayweather started to snap his head back with everything he threw. After a four-punch combination the referee had seen enough and stepped in to stop the fight.
With the win Mayweather goes 50-0 and McGregor gave one hell of an effort.
