Mark Hunt Rolls On, Derrick Lewis Possibly Retires At UFC Fight Night 110
Former UFC heavyweight title challenger Mark Hunt defeated rising talent Derrick Lewis at Fight Night 110.
Two heavyweight juggernauts collided in the main event at UFC Fight Night 11 and two paths went drastically different ways in the aftermath.
Seasoned veteran Mark Hunt and rising prospect Derrick Lewis met in the center of the Octagon to throw down Saturday night in Auckland, New Zealand, with many figuring “The Black Beast” would hold the upper hand in the exchanges. Lewis came into the tilt owning the longest winning streak in the heavyweight ranks with six straight victories, and a win over Hunt would have built the Houston native’s case for a title opportunity.
But that’s not how things would shake out on Saturday night. And the situation would take another drastic turn in the aftermath.
The 43-year-old proved his “Super Samoan” talents once more by pressuring and outstriking the younger Lewis deep into the fourth round until he put the surging talent away with strikers against the cage. Although Hunt didn’t seem all too surprised by the outcome, the former Pride and K-1 fighter did admit in his post-fight interview he was prepared for the fight to be his last.
Yet, with the victory over Lewis he’ll be back in the top 5 mix of elites, and that will surely land him another big name in a list of big names toward the end of his career.
Staying with that regard, Lewis could have very well taken off the gloves for good last night and called it a day.
Following his loss at Fight Night 110, the heavy-handed striker told Brian Stann the fight was most likely his last because he was about to get married and refused to put his family through the hardships and sacrifices of another fight camp. And while post-fight emotions can run high and are hard to gauge for accuracy, just the fact the 32-year-old fighter is talking about retirement shows it’s something he’s been considering.
