Max Holloway And Claudia Gadelha Shine, Make Bonus Money At UFC 212
Newly crowned undisputed featherweight champion Max Holloway led the list of post-fight bonus winners at UFC 212.
It was a night of standout performances and star turns on Saturday night at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro and several fighter earned some extra cash for their work inside the cage. The UFC released the list of winners at the post-fight press conference and it was a deserving collective indeed.
Standing UFC interim featherweight champion Max Holloway threw away the temporary label for an undisputed crown when he bounced back from a sluggish two frames to level and battered former Brazilian king Jose Aldo in the main event. The Nova Uniao product was able to land big shots early but Holloway's constant pressure and output eventually overwhelmed Aldo as a crisp right hand on the end of a combination put "Junior" on the canvas.
An extended flurry on the ground would seal the deal for Holloway, and not only secure the coveted title he's been chasing, but a fight of the night performance bonus in the tune of $50,000 in the process.
Another fighter risking high stakes at UFC 212 was women's strawweight contender Claudia Gadelha.
The former title challenger turned resurgent contender stepped in to throw down with fellow threat Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a bout that many figured would determined the next fighter to compete for championship gold. Although Gadelha may have diminished that hype in her post-fight interview with Briann Stann her performance said otherwise as she made quick work of her Polish opponent.
Gadelha was able to get the action to the canvas early where she finished things off with a rear-naked choke midway through the opening frame and notch a bonus-worthy finish of her own.
Another submission that did not go unnoticed was the shocking turn Brian Kelleher pulled off against Iuri Alcantara to kick things off at UFC 212. The New York native caught the Brazilian in a guillotine that forced the Brazilian veteran to tap for the first time in his run under the UFC banner. In doing so Kelleher capped things off with some smoke in the promo department and pulled off a clean sweep as he picked up a bonus check for his efforts.
