As a potential mega-fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather creeps closer, tensions continue to rise between parties on both sides.
After Jeff Mayweather, uncle and trainer to Floyd Mayweather, told Eye on The Game that the UFC's desire for an 80-20 split of McGregor's portion of the purse is what was holding the fight up, UFC President Dana White lashed out at the UFC 210 post-fight press conference, calling the rumors "bulls***."
Jeff Mayweather has fired back. In a recent interview with Fight Hype, Jeff Mayweather riffed on the situation.
"The only reason he['s] even saying anything about me is because of the fact that I'm telling the truth and the truth hurts," Mayweather said. "When you put it out there and you have all of these people with all of these expectations of you and then now, everybody realizing that you ripping these fighters off, and that's basically what it amounts to.
"You have a guy (McGregor), true enough he's going to make more money than he's ever made in his life, but at the same time, 80/20, that's a horrible split in any sense of the word. I don't care because at the end of the day, Conor's still gotta go in the ring."
Jeff Mayweather continued, saying he "just pulled the wool off of him (White), that's all."
"I'm talking about the UFC with Conor McGregor [80/20 split] because Floyd's money is guaranteed," Mayweather said. "Whatever Floyd gets, Floyd's gonna get. Whatever he asks for, that's what they gotta give him for that fight to even happen."
According to Jeff Mayweather, he and White were "real close at one point in time," but that "Dana White has changed."
"Oh yeah, of course, he's not even remotely the same person that he was when I met him when he first came here (to Las Vegas)," Jeff Mayweather said. "He's not even close to that. To be honest, to me, it seems like he's on something. The thing is when I first met him, he used to be real, real mild-mannered guy. He never tried to be braggadocios or this or that. I don't know if money changes you or anything like that, but if it does, it made him a much worse person than he used to be."
For what it's worth, White has said that he plans to sit down with McGregor in late April to begin working on a deal. During the UFC 210 post-fight press conference, White added "We're not close (to a deal), but that "I see this fight happening."
