Fedor vs Mitrione Cancelation Updates
There was drama this evening as just hours before Bellator 172 got underway, MMAFighting reported that the Fedor Emelianenko vs Matt Mitrione fight had been canceled after Mitrione fell ill.
It later came to light that Mitrione had fallen victim to kidney stones and had failed his pre-fight medical assessment. Mitrione pleaded to fight, but the commission's word was final and he was pulled from the card.

Helwani also reported that there could've been a late twist in the tale with Chael Sonnen apparently saying he was willing to take the fight just hours before the event started.
Bellator later confirmed that Sonnen, Tito Ortiz and Muhammed Lawal were all interested in stepping in, but they didn't have enough time to put a fight together before the show began.
The fallout was that Patricky Freire vs. Josh Thomson was upgraded to the main event and Anatoly Tokov vs. Francisco France upgraded to the main card

Media at the event later in the evening reported that Scott Coker had informed them the Fedor vs. Mitrione fight would be rebooked in San Jose in May or June.
