Skinny G Podcast Episode 5: Oluwale Bamgbose
UFC middleweight Oluwale Bamgbose is the latest guest on the Skinny G Podcast with Jim Edwards.
Oluwale Bamgbose might not be the most recognized name on the UFC Fight Night London fight card, but British UFC fans beware: This man is heading to the English capital, and he's looking to make a big impact.
Last week, the UFC announced that British fighter Tom Breese will be making his middleweight debut against the Nigerian-American, Bamgbose. After nine months off, Breese will be taking the step up from 170 pounds, and he will be heading straight into the fire when he faces the former Ring of Combat middleweight champion in London.
Bamgbose, or "The Holy War Angel" as he is also known, is a character like none other in the UFC. Speaking to FloCombat last weekend, the passion and motivation poured out of him, and he explained why this first venture into Europe and fighting outside the U.S. for the first time was so important for him.
"I've targeted building a fan base overseas, and I know I have the talent to excite the crowd and to win fans over," Bamgbose said, speaking exclusively to FloCombat. "I can win their hearts, and I have a message, I always have a message and I can't wait to fight to show what that entails.
"I will not turn down fights--that's something I will never do. Whoever they give me, that's who I will fight. It's like Genghis Khan, he had a saying that, 'It's not my choice to go to war with you, but if you are my enemy you must've done something in past life that …duh duh duh duh duh … all that bullsh*t'.
"What I'm saying is, whoever is put in front me, I believe it's meant to happen and it's meant for us to make history. Me and Tom are going to make history together."
Speaking to FloCombat last week, Breese said he would have advantages over Bamgbose in both the cardio and the grappling aspects of the fight. Bamgbose begged to differ and explained the only advantage the British fighter would have is the home crowd.
"For me, it's about going out there and exploring everything that I see," Bamgbose said. "I'm not going to sleep on Tom. He's a good fighter and the majority of his wins are via submission. Obviously, I can see why he would think that, but at the end of the day, you can't just go in there [thinking you have those advantages]. That's like me going in there and thinking I'm going to knock him out.

"The goal is to just be dominant and embrace the challenges of whatever he offers and be open minded. It's going to be a grinder, the fight is going to be a grinder, and I'm there to explore. I'm going to be an explorer that night, and I'm going to be ready for it all--wherever the fight goes, I'll be there with my eyes wide open and ready.
"I hope the level he talks about that's higher than mine--he better bring it, because I'm bringing mine--my high level--the best me is going to be there that night just to see if he has some. I want to see his high level that he was talking about--I want to see. It's going to be my high level versus his high level, so let's get this show on the road, man. Let's get it on and let's see what happens. I can't wait. I'm excited."
With eight weeks still to go until the two meet in the Octagon, Bamgbose had a clear plan of what he would be doing until then and said he'd be turning up in the best shape of his life. Anyone thinking he was a man picked to give Breese an easy start at middleweight better think again--Bamgbose is coming to England with a spring in his step, and he's ready to win over the fans at The O2.
"The key is to stay healthy and just stick to mastering Tom's style," Bamgbose said. "I need to be ready for whatever he's going to display, showcase and be ready to counter what he has to offer. I need to be a step ahead of him every step of the way and being first as well.

"For the U.K. fans, get ready to see a show--be ready to see 'The Holy War Angel' live. Enjoy the show. It's going to be mixed martial arts at its best and it's definitely going to be the best version of me and Tom. I got to showcase my high level now."
But Bamgbose wasn't finished there. He wanted to send a clear message to Breese ahead of their March 18 clash.
"You ever watched Dragon Ball Z? So Super Saiyan 4--it will be something like that," Bamgbose said. "It will be Super Saiyan 4. Holy Warrior point four, or something like that--I'm just making stuff up, but it's definitely going to be a high-level intensity fight because both of us are competitors. I don't want to lose and obviously he's a fighter so he doesn't want to lose either, and I'm ready to bring it.
"I've never been spoon-fed anything and nothing's ever come easy for me. I have to make Tom feel that. He's going to feel that--you're going to feel that, and unfortunately, he's going to get a loss. You're going to feel my pain, you're going to feel what I had to go through.
"If it wasn't for God, I wouldn't be in this position right now to do what I love and I want to give it all for him."
