Future Stars Shine at USFFC 29
The regional scene in mixed martial arts has served as a feeder system to the biggest stages in the sport, but it's a rare thing to have a batch of highly touted prospects all in one place.
On Saturday night at USFFC 29, the North Carolina-based promotion proved their roster is certified legit.
The main event put a spotlight on rising bantamweight Jared Scoggins. "Psycho" is the younger brother of current UFC flyweight Justin Scoggins, and shares a lot of the same buzz and hype "Tank" held before getting the call up to the big leagues.
Scoggins squared off with Chachi Tabor, and put on another display to back up all the excitement surrounding him. In the family's signature striking style, Scoggins kept his hands hanging by his waist as he fired off sidekicks and head kicks from a karate stance. Once he dotted up Tabor with a few combinations, Scoggins would put the Virginia native on his back and commence to a ground and pound assault.
It was rinse, wash and repeat throughout the three round affair, as Scoggins picked up another big victory, and moved within striking distance of joining his brother in the UFC.
And while Scoggins came through in the anchor position on the event, the other future stars on the card delivered as well.
Tanner Saraceno battered Muhieddin Alkhatib early and often to pick up a second round stoppage via destruction, and highly touted female fighter Hannah Rokala made immediate internet headlines by forcing Brianna Smith to quit via nausea.
Rounding out the night was the grappling clinic put on by upstart Dylan Cala. "The Future" lived up to his nickname as he wrangled and controlled Kongo Bakatukanda in every possible way en route to notching a second-round submission finish via rear-naked choke. With the win, Cala not only remains undefeated in his professional career, but is realistically only another win or two away from a much larger opportunity.
