Michael Johnson Stuns Dustin Poirier at UFC Fight Night 94
Michael Johnson scored a first-round knockout over Dustin Poirier in the main event at UFC Fight Night 94.
UFC's twelfth trip to Texas took them to the border town of Hidalgo, TX as two of the lightweight division's top ten fighters, No. 7 Dustin Poirier, and No. 5 Michael Johnson clashed in the main event.
A win for either provided the prospect of a big upside with the man getting his hand raised immediately putting himself right in the mix of the 155 pounds title picture. Both looked like they were feeling the pressure of the situation in the opening exchanges as they traded leg kicks at distance with little success.
Johnson, however, unleashed the fury with his hands and caught Poirier with a booming right hook and follow-up left. Poirier hit the canvas and Johnson followed up with a big shot as he lay prone on the ground. The referee then dove in to call the fight and Johnson had the win after just one minute and thirty-five seconds of the first round.
In an unsavory moment after, Johnson stood over the fallen Poirier and appeared to shout 'f**k you' as he lay on the ground.
In the co-main event of the evening, a middleweight bout between Uriah Hall and Derek Brunson ended in spectacular fashion inside the first round.
Brunson connected with big left hand to drop Hall to the mat a minute and a half into the fight and after a brief follow up flurry of strikes, referee Herb Dean stepped in to call the finish. Hall contested an early stoppage, but he looked out on impact to the mat.
Before that, Chas Skelly opened up the main card with a bang as he submitted Maximo Blanco in just 19-seconds. Skelly opened up with an incredible flying kick and then locked on an Anaconda Choke to send Blanco unconscious. It was the fastest submission win in UFC/WEC featherweight history and the 8th fastest submission in UFC history.
