Today could potentially be remembered as a historic day in mixed martial arts.

The formation of the Professional Fighters Association (PFA) was announced this morning via email . The group has also launched a website, and FloCombat has confirmed that the group is planning a press conference in Las Vegas next week.

Here is everything you need to know about this major announcement at a glance.

What is the Professional Fighters Association (PFA)

The Professional Fighters Association (PFA) is a new association that has been established to represent the collective interests of fighters employed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

"PFA will not only be a union of fighters, but it will be governed solely by fighters," the release said. "It is the fighters who will control their own futures."

What is the objective of the PFA?

The objective of the PFA is to organize UFC athletes so that they may collectively bargain their terms and conditions of employment pursuant to the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).

"The scales have been tipped in the favor of the UFC for too long," the PFA stated in the release. "It is time for for the fighters --- the one's responsible for UFC's success --- to receive their equal share."

Who is in charge of the PFA?

A team of very highly respected professionals has been assembled to assist the UFC fighters who choose to work with the PFA.

The figureheads of the PFA team include the experienced sports agent Jeff Borris, labor attorney Lucas Middlebrook (Nick Diaz's lawyer) and the well-renowned sports economist Andrew Zimbalast.

Who has given their backing to the PFA

The formation of a fighter's association has been given support by other major sports players' unions, including MLBPA, NFLPA, NHLPA, NBAPA and MLSPU.

Several leaders from the above organizations included statements in the release including Tony Clark, the current executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association.

"I support the efforts of the fighters to organize," Clark said. "The solidarity and commitment of the group will be essential to their ability to protect and advance their workplace rights."

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith also wrote a statement of his support:

"As a strong labor union, the NFLPA recognized the need for athletes to have a collective voice and supports the efforts of the UFC athletes to stand together as a team to advocate for their rights as men and women."

Bob Foose, Executive Director of the Major League Soccer Players Union also stated:

"The MLS Players Union supports the efforts of UFC fighters. By standing together, the men and women of UFC will have the best opportunity to ensure that their collective rights are protected."
