Many people are sleeping on how interesting and how important the Adrien "The Problem" Broner versus Ashley "The Treasure" Theophane fight actually is.
The championship fight will serve as the main event on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card on Spike, April 1 at the D.C. Armory.
Broner (31-2, 23 KOs) will be looking to make a successful first defense of his WBA super-lightweight championship he won by destroying Khabib Allakhverdiev. Besides winning another belt, the 26-year-old Broner became one of the few fighters to have won belts in four different weight classes in their career.
Despite losing a couple of fights to bigger, stronger opponents in the 147-pound weight class, the four-division champion is preparing for the Theophane fight, as if it’s one of the most important of his already splendid career.
“This is really a big fight for me. I know that Ashley Theophane is going to come to fight, because he has something to prove,” a very serious Broner said at the fight announcement press conference. “He's going to try to take my world title. This training camp, I've really been perfecting my craft. This is going to be the best performance of my career. It's going to be a highlight-reel performance. I'm not coming to just get a win.”
While Broner is using the fight to enhance his legacy, and to possibly set up a huge unification bout this summer against WBO junior welterweight champion Terrance “Bud” Crawford, Theophane is using it to make a dream come true.
The British-born boxer's career began taking a turn for the better when he first stepped foot inside the Mayweather Boxing Club Gym back in 2012. After originally coming to train for a fight which was eventually called off, Theophane was taken under the wing of the Mayweather Promotions fighters as one of their own.
Once Mayweather himself took him under his wing, Theophane’s career began heading in a championship title trajectory.
Now retired from boxing and a full-time promoter, the former pound-for-pound king is focused on helping fighters like Theophane reach their career goals.
"Ashley Theophane is a guy that came from the UK with a dream. His dream was to be world champion one day. Same dream I had,” Mayweather said. “He's a very humble, hungry, and dedicated fighter. I want to thank Adrien for giving him the chance to make his dream come true. I believe Adrien will continue to put on exciting fights and a good show.”
Although he’s coming into the fight as the underdog. The soft spoken Theophane, wants everyone to know he plans on making the best of his career-defining opportunity to make his dream come true.
"It's been a long journey as a professional and I have to thank Floyd for giving me this chance,” Theophane said at the opening press conference. “April 1 is going to be a war. Adrien is a warrior and I know he has no quit in him. If you have a dream, you have to work hard to make it come true and that's what I'm here to do."
