Gary Russell Among Nine Advancing On Day 4 At US Boxing Olympic Trials
2012 champion Eros Correa lost his bid to get to the Games, while Gary Russell headlined nine boxers who kept Rio 2016 hopes alive on Day 4 of the US Boxing Olympic Trials.
2012 Olympic Trials champion Eros Correa lost his bid to finally get to the Games, while nine boxers kept their Rio 2016 hopes alive, including Gary Russell, during Day 4 of the US Boxing Olympic Trials on Thursday at the Silver Legacy Grande Exposition Hall in Reno.
Correa, who won the light flyweight division at the Trials four years ago but did not place high enough at Worlds or win the “reload” tournament to automatically qualify for London, was hoping for better luck this time around.
But the San Jose product was beaten by Antonio Vargas in the winners bracket semifinals, which knocked him into the challengers bracket. He won his first bout against Gilbert Renteria on Wednesday, but lost a split decision to Christian Carto, the 2014 Golden Gloves National Champion, officially ending his Olympic dream.
That dream lives on, however, for Carto and eight other fighters who scored victories during ThursdayÂ’s action.
Among them was Russell, who is aiming to become the third member of his family to make it through the Trials victorious, and doing it the hard way.
In 2007, his older brother, Gary Russell Jr., lost to Roberto Marroquin in the first round – his first loss to an American in eight years – before rebounding to win the bantamweight division. Only Russell Jr., Evander Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr. and Floyd Mayweather have ever lost in the first round and come back to win the Trials.
On the opening day of these Trials, Russell lost a split decision to Jaron Ellis, which knocked him into the light welterweight challengers bracket. Russell continued to march through that bracket with a unanimous decision over Jamaine Ortiz-Rodriguez. He will now face Rahim Gonzalez in the challengers bracket final.
