Marlo Moore scored the most dramatic finish on Day 3 of the US Boxing Olympic Trials in Reno on Wednesday, earning a technical knockout over Darmani Rock to advance to the super heavyweight final.

Moore, who left home at age 17, lived on the streets, and now cares for his daughter as a single parent, entered the bout as a distinct underdog to Rock, the 2015 USA Boxing National Champion and winner of the first menÂ’s Trials qualifier. 

The Hayward, Calif. native appeared to be trailing Rock on the scorecards after the first two rounds, but came out in the third round like a man on a mission and sent Rock to the canvas. The Philadelphian returned to his feet but still wobbled from the initial blow. Moore pounced immediately and floored him a second time, leading the referee to step in and call the bout.

Because Rock was knocked out, he will be unable to make his way through the challengers bracket because USA Boxing rules stipulate that he must complete a 30-day restriction on fighting due to head blows.

Moore was one of nine fighters to inch one step closer to qualifying for the Rio Olympics. Others to advance out of the winners bracket included Brent Venegas, who defeated Pan Am Games champion Antonio Vargas at flyweight; Maliek Montgomery, who won a split decision over 2015 Golden Gloves champ Teofimo Lopez at lightweight, a non-Olympic Trials division; Ardreal Holmes, who scored a unanimous decision over Brian Ceballo at welterweight; Jonathan Esquivel, who defeated Elvis Figueroa, 3-0, at light heavyweight; Nico Hernandez, who topped Leroy Davila, 3-0, at light flyweight; Shakur Stevenson, who scored a unanimous win over Efren Lopez at bantamweight; Jaron Ennis, who beat Rahim Gonzales, 3-0, at light welterweight; Charles Conwell, who won a split decision over Chordale Booker at middleweight; and Cam F. Awesome, who won unanimously over Derae Crane at heavyweight.

Those winning fighters will have off until SaturdayÂ’s finals. The losers in yesterdayÂ’s fights, excluding Rock, will resume competition on Friday when they face the winners of ThursdayÂ’s challengers bracket bouts.
