UFC Brooklyn: Gregor Gillespie Finishes Yancy Medeiros, Packs Tackle Box
Gregor Gillespie discusses his impressive victory over Yancy Medeiros Saturday at UFC Fight Night 143 in Brooklyn.
If there’s a more suffocating fighter than Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC’s lightweight division, it just might be Gregor Gillespie.
En route to his fifth straight finish, Gillespie smothered Yancy Medeiros at UFC Fight Night 143 in Brooklyn. While he recognized that some fans might not see it as the most exciting style, he hopes fans understand that it is a cerebral approach to the fight.
“That’s an investment to get a finish later,” Gillespie explained to Brooklyn fans. “A finish is a finish and a win is a win. The result is the only thing that matters.”
He also gave it up to his opponent for stuffing plenty of his attempts. Medeiros made it hard for Gillespie to get an early finish, but the standout wrestler knew it wasn’t a pace his opponent could keep for three rounds.
“Yancy’s a better fighter than anyone I’ve ever faced," Gillespie said. "I could hold that back position for two title fights in a row if I had to. I don’t get tired doing it and guys soften up. I knew I would soften him up and that he couldn’t do it for three rounds. I finished him in two.”
With a number by his name already, one has to expect that the next one will be a big matchup for Gillespie. Of course, not before some fishing though.
“I just want to go fishing. I don’t even want to think about fighting for now," he said. "Some people like to call fighters out and jump back in, but for me it’s such a weight off my shoulders."
