Colby Covington has said a lot leading into his interim title fight at UFC 225 and now he's even managed to compare himself to President Donald Trump.
Over the past year, Covington has become one of the most vocal fighters on the entire UFC roster with words for everyone from welterweight champion Tyron Woodley to Conor McGregor and even UFC color commentator Joe Rogan.
Of course, Covington has backed up his words with performances inside the Octagon where he's won five fights in a row including a win over former title contender Demian Maia in his most recent performance. Regardless of his win streak, Covington will walk into his fight against Rafael dos Anjos as the underdog but that doesn’t seem to matter much to the former All-American wrestler from Oregon State.
"I see the nerds saying that I'm the underdog. You know who else was an underdog? The leader of the free nation, Donald Trump," Covington said when speaking to FloCombat during the UFC 225 media conference callon Thursday. "And just like him, I will rule by grabbing these p--sies and putting them in their place."
Much like the president, Covington has come under fire for his controversial statements including last year when he called the country of Brazil a 'dump' and referred to its citizens as 'filthy animals'.
Covington isn't much on apologies much less caring what people think of him or what he has to say.
"I am the living embodiment of the First Amendment," Covington said. "All these critics are Cheeto eating dorks. They've never been in a cage and fought in a steel cage so I don't really care what their opinion is."
Prior to this matchup coming together, Covington actually asked to face dos Anjos over a year ago but the fight never materialized and he couldn't wait to remind him of that fact on Thursday.
"I'm going to mark your face up like the Liberty Bell. Land of the free, home of the brave, b--ch," Covington said. "You've been ducking this fight since Singpore. We were supposed to fight in Singapore and that's why you got moved below me on the card cause you didn't want to fight me. You said 'oh Colby I had to Google you'. Well Google me now, b--ch. I'm the hottest ticket in the game."
As far as the actual matchup goes, Covington certainly didn't seem threatened by any of the weapons that dos Anjos will bring into their fight.
Dos Anjos has gone undefeated since moving to welterweight but none of that seems to concern Covington much as he prepares for their title fight just over a week away.
"He's soft. I don't see anything in 'Ralphie' that presents any new challenge for me that I haven't seen before in the gym," Covington said. "I train at the greatest gym in the world [American Top Team] so RDA's not going to present any problems that I haven't seen before in the gym."
