UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is undefeated and seemingly untouchable—but Kevin Lee remains unfazed.
The red-hot 155-pound contender recently dismantled Edson Barboza at UFC Fight Night 128 in Atlantic City, NJ, earning a fifth-round doctor's stoppage for his efforts.
In the fight, Lee landed 142 significant strikes and 233 strikes overall, sprinkling in four takedowns for good measure. Much of his work came via ground-and-pound, and Barboza had no answers.
In fact, if you squinted a little, it looked a whole lot like Nurmagomedov's own performance vs. Barboza at UFC 219 in December. The 26-0 Dagestani notched four takedowns of his own in that fight, blasting Barboza with 154 total strikes to earn a unanimous decision victory.
While Lee acknowledges Nurmagomedov's skills, he doesn't see an impossible challenge by any means.
"I think I have a different style than a lot of people can see," Lee told Joe Rogan during a recent episode of the JRE MMA Show. "You go back to Khabib, his style it's... it's good. It's obviously very good. But I can see a lot of holes in it. And I saw those holes many years ago."
For Lee, this isn't a recent development, either. Even while Nurmagomedov was climbing the ranks and still relatively unknown to the mainstream audience, Lee says he saw holes in his game.
"I've been calling out Khabib for years," Lee said. "I've been wanting to fight him just because people got those questions. I got those questions too, so I'm like, 'Let's see what this motherfu*ker got.' I see it. I see them holes. I don't really focus on too much of the good."
Asked about which holes he sees specifically, Lee chuckled.
"I got that boy['s] number, I'm telling you, Joe," he said.
Then, he elaborated, dropping some specific ways in which he thinks he could best Nurmagomedov inside the cage.
"Even on a lot of his takedowns, he misses a lot of them," Lee said. "He's very square. He kind of just bum-rushes. People were talking about the Barboza fight before, and they're like, 'Are you looking at that fight? Are you going to try to build off that one?' I'm like, 'Yeah, I mean, he did OK. The fight was good. He beat the hell out of Barboza. But I saw the holes in it, he's just running square forward at him. He got hit with a lot of shots. I can see it.'"
Making a final prediction, Lee made his thoughts clear.
"If he wants to run at me square like that... *laughs* I'm getting paid," Lee said. "I'm getting paid, I'm sorry."
