Dana White: Conor McGregor Will Be Stripped, UFC 223 For Real Title
UFC President Dana White clears the air on everything Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather, and Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov related.
UFC President Dana White just cleared the air on everything Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather, and Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov related.
Speaking with TMZ, White was first asked about a McGregor vs. Mayweather rematch. To the UFC boss, the fight is possible but it won't happen in the boxing ring again.
"I think the only way a rematch makes sense in that fight is in the UFC," White said.
That said, White also pointed out that this is not "likely" right now. It's not even being discussed.
"There's nothing done. We're not in active negotiations," White said. "Anything is possible. It's just, I don't think Floyd needs the money right now."
With that subject squashed, White then moved on to the UFC 223 main event between current interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and challenger Khabib Nurmagomedov that's taking place in New York on April 7.
The confusion here involves McGregor, the UFC's official lightweight king. With Ferguson holding the interim strap, will the UFC 223 fight be an interim title defense? Or will the UFC strip McGregor and grant Ferguson the official title?
White cleared that up, echoing a sentiment tweeted by BJ Penn's Chris Taylor last month.
Breaking! I have confirmed with sources that Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight for the undisputed UFC lightweight title at #UFC223 in Brooklyn. The bout will be made official later this week. McGregor will be stripped of his title. The bout was 1st reported by TASS

"I said in the last press conference, that fight [Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov] will be for the title," White said. "It's not for the interim title. That fight is for the title."
That means McGregor will be stripped of his title, as he was stripped of his featherweight title. According to White, this is just fine by the Irish superstar.
"Is he upset? No, Conor understands," White said. "Conor made a lot of money. He wants some time off, but the division has to go on and the business has to go on."
After Ferguson and Nurmagomedov square off, however, White still hopes to see McGregor fight the winner for the title.
"Yeah, I'd like to see Conor fight the winner," he said.
Regarding a timeline for that potential clash, White had no definitive answers, even saying McGregor may never set foot into the UFC Octagon again.
"It was August and then September," White said. "I don't know. I say it all the time, man: With that kind of money, Conor might never come back."
