Mike Perry Reflects On Winnipeg: 'I Let People Down'

What you see is what you get with Mike Perry.

The hard-charging welterweight speaks his mind to the fullest and wears his heart on his proverbial sleeve. Granted, there is always a heavy string of trash-talking in the buildup to any fight "Platinum" is involved with, but those elements are all part of the scrap where Perry is concerned.

The Michigan native simply loves to mix it up inside the cage, and Perry has proven to be one of the fastest rising talents in the stacked UFC welterweight division. Nevertheless, when stumbles have occurred on Perry's journey, the Team Sparta representative has always dealt with them head on. In those moments Perry has pushed the bravado aside and expressed humility when talking about his missteps and setbacks.

During a recent interview with MMAFighting.com, Perry discussed his recent loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC on Fox 26 last month in Winnipeg, Canada. In the bout, Perry suffered a unanimous decision defeat, and while it was only the second loss of his professional career, the brash-talking welterweight has no intention of getting used to losing.

“December is apparently a tough month for me at the end of the year, that third fight, it happened twice in a row,” Perry said. “I thought for sure I was going to redeem myself this December and I just let a lot of people down with a little bit of carelessness maybe, and you know I try to fight careless a little bit, that sometimes works in my favor. What can I say? Performers slip and fall. It happens.

“I was in interviews and I was like, ‘You gotta get behind me. USA, I’m here, and I’m ready to show the world,’" Perry said. “I guess what I showed was we’re tough and gritty and you don’t intimidate us. It doesn’t matter, but apparently I was vulnerable to that leg kick and I still had some things we had to work on and I just didn’t come away with the 'W.' I let people down, I know people put money on me too and I let people down. I let myself down and I’m ready to make up for that.”

Fortunately for Perry he won't have to wait all too long for a shot at getting things back on track. The 26-year-old will square off with Max Griffin at UFC on Fox 28 in Orlando, FL. Not only does Perry feel obligated to return to the win column, but with the bout also taking place in the city he now calls home, the hard-hitting knockout artist feels beyond motivated to get the job done on Feb. 24.

“It’s up to me, like I said. It’s my fault, there’s another thing that I did that I let people down, but God’s plan is God’s plan,” Perry said. “I’m still here, I still proved something. Each time I’ll prove more and I’ll do more and be better, I don’t make the same mistakes twice.”
