Jessica Rose-Clark Dominates Paige VanZant In St. Louis
Jessica Rose-Clark defeated Paige VanZant via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 124.
The UFC's decision to create a women's flyweight division generated some buzz, but the anticipation for the new weight class amplified when Paige VanZant announced she would be moving up to join. VanZant's bid for a strawweight title shot had stalled with losses in two out of three showings, and she hoped jumping into a new division would provide a fresh start.
On Sunday night at UFC Fight Night 124 in St. Louis, Jessica Rose-Clark soured those hopes.
The Dancing With The Stars alum struggled from the jump as Rose-Clark used her wrestling to dominate position. The Australian applied constant pressure and twice had VanZant in serious trouble with submission attempts. That said, VanZant showed her signature grit and was able to endure and escape whatever Rose-Clark threw her way.
Nevertheless, VanZant simply couldn't shift out of first gear, and the end result was a unanimous decision victory on the judges' scorecards in favor of Rose-Clark.
With the win, Rose-Clark has now notched three-straight victories and will solidify herself as a top contender in the newly minted division. On the flip, the loss marks back-to-back defeats for VanZant, and setbacks in three of her last four showings will only serve to further tarnish the once bright future so many had projected for the former dancer turned fighter.
