Holly Holm Would Offer Cris Cyborg Rematch, Just As She Did To Ronda Rousey
Holly Holm discusses the possibility of a rematch with Cris Cyborg should she pull off the upset Dec. 30 at UFC 219.
Holly Holm understands the parallels being made between her upcoming UFC 219 main event against Cris "Cyborg" Justino and her bout against Ronda Rousey back in 2015.
Both opponents were seemingly unbeatable, and the odds were stacked against her. But perhaps one similarity that may ring true above any other is what happens next if Holm gets the win on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas.
Immediately after landing the head kick heard 'round the world that sent Rousey plummeting from the ranks of the unbeaten at UFC 193, Holm happily offered her opponent a rematch, with rumors swirling that the two would end up facing off for a second time in early-to-mid 2016.
Unfortunately, the rematch never came together, as Rousey ended up taking off almost the entire year without giving much of an indication that she would ever return to fighting. For her part, Holm had no plans to sit around and wait.
"With Ronda, I was open to a rematch as well, it's just they didn't know how long or when she would come back or if she would want to, and that's when I said I don't want to just wait around," Holm told FloCombat on Thursday's UFC 219 media conference call. "I'll wait if you can tell me if it's going to be within six months or whatever, but I didn't want to just be waiting around for that one fight. I want to be able to fight and train and live out my passion. I didn't want it to be based on just one fighter.
"So I was welcome to the fact to rematch her. It's just they didn't have any answer if she really was going to come back and if she did how long it would be. So I think that situation was different."
When it comes to Cyborg, who has gone undefeated for more than a decade, Holm believes that if she was offered an immediate rematch then they would definitely fight again in 2018.
While Cyborg may only be making the first defense of her UFC featherweight title on Dec. 30, her winning streak is legendary, and she's gone virtually untouched during her current 19-fight undefeated run. If Holm beats Cyborg at UFC 219, it would be considered a massive upset, which is why the former UFC women's bantamweight champion would happily offer her a second chance.
"If that were to happen in this fight, of course I would say yes," Holm said about an immediate rematch with Cyborg. "I think anybody deserves a rematch. I think that's just the name of the game. That's the fighting spirit, and I would definitely be open to that. I feel like Cris is definitely a competitive person as well and trains hard, and I think her and Ronda are two really different people.
"I feel like the situation after the fight would be a little bit different anyway. I don't think Cris would want to sit aside for a year or however long. I mean, I don't know, but I feel like [there] would be the chance of a rematch if that were to happen."
