Georges St-Pierre: Michael Bisping Is 'Terrified' To Wrestle Me
Georges St-Pierre claims Michael Bisping is terrified of going to the ground with him at UFC 217.
Georges St-Pierre understands his strengths.
When he takes on Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC 217 inside New York's historic Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4, St-Pierre will have the chance to earn UFC middleweight gold. It'd mark an impressive comeback for St-Pierre, who hasn't fought since November 2013, and he knows Bisping's fear going into the bout.
Speaking with Ariel Helwani during a recent episode of "The MMA Hour," St-Pierre discussed his matchup with Bisping, dropping some heat along the way.
“He’s playing always the same song. He’s terrified of me wrestling him. Terrified,” St-Pierre said. “In every interview he does, he’s begging me to stand and bang with him... I mean, if you don’t know the ground [game], you shouldn’t be in MMA. You should be in kickboxing.
“Fighting on the ground is part of the game, and he’s terrified. So he wants me to be like, ‘Oh, OK, I’m going to stand and bang with you.’"
Lauded for his incredible grappling skills, it's no surprise St-Pierre would feel confident in his ability to neutralize the striker Bisping on the ground.
The biggest complaint toward St-Pierre's style, however, is that he doesn't finish fights. His control and his ability to minimize damage absorbed is impressive, but it also usually leads to the judges' scorecards.
St-Pierre has gone to seven straight decisions, and his last finish came via corner stoppage at UFC 94 in January 2009, when he faced BJ Penn in a welterweight title defense.
Against Bisping at UFC 217, St-Pierre promises this streak will come to an end and he will stamp out Bisping definitively.
“I’m going to finish him — that’s what I believe,” St-Pierre said. “Either a knockout or submission.”
