Best Of The Best: Building A UFC Super Card From July 2017
What would a mega UFC card look like with all events combined from July? FloCombat takes a look.
After a somewhat disappointing start to 2017, the UFC put together its best month of fights in some time in July, trotting out The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption Finale, UFC 213, UFC Fight Night 113, UFC on Fox 25, and UFC 214.
Each card provided its highs and lows, as is tradition, but overall, it's tough to argue July's brilliance when taken as a whole. Justin Gaethje and Michael Johnson put on a Fight of the Year contender in the month's first event, The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption Finale. Then Jon Jones punctuated July with a bonkers third-round knockout of Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.
With a flick of the hips, Jones reclaimed his UFC light heavyweight title, the hearts and attention of MMA fans across the globe, and his legacy as the greatest fighter to ever grace the cage.
(Mostly) everything was perfect. But what would July look like if every event was combined into one mega-card?
Keeping things somewhat realistic (not just combining every main card together), we put together a card. It looks a little somethin' like this.
Tyron Woodley* vs. Demian Maia (for the UFC welterweight title) (UFC 214)
Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero (for the interim UFC middleweight title) (UFC 213)
Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino vs. Tonya Evinger (for the vacant UFC women's featherweight title) (UFC 214)
Chris Weidman vs. Kelvin Gastelum (UFC on Fox 25)
Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone (UFC 214)
Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum (UFC 213)
Jimmie Rivera vs. Thomas Almeida (UFC on Fox 25)
Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller (UFC 213)
Ricardo Lamas vs. Jason Knight (UFC 214)
Jesse Taylor vs. Dhiego Lima (for The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption glory) (TUF: Redemption Finale)
* denotes champion
Not bad, eh? The 13-fight card kicks off online with the finale of The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption between Jesse Taylor and Dhiego Lima and then finishes with a bout between top light heavyweights Jimi Manuwa and Volkan Oezdemir before passing things over to Fox Sports 1.
The Fox Sports 1 card resembles some pay-per-view cards, featuring a battle of top heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum, top bantamweights Jimmie Rivera and Thomas Almeida, and welterweight animals Robbie Lawler and Donald Ceronne. It finishes with our aforementioned Fight of the Year contender between Gaethje and Johnson.
Putting Gaethje vs. Johnson as the Fox Sports 1 main event will undoubtedly lead viewers to purchase the pay-per-view. You could've gotten us to do anything after watching that fight. We even ordered UFC 213 the next day! Incredible. So buying a stacked pay-per-view like this one above is a no-brainer after watching that particular brand of violence unfold.
The pay-per-view card is where things get extra crazy. You have to keep all title fights of course, so we group all four of the title fights in July at the top and slide in the UFC on Fox 25 main event between Chris Weidman and Kelvin Gastelum in the final slot.
Overall, we have:
Maybe you can convince us otherwise.
