Throwback Thursday: Conor McGregor Earns Vicious KO In Amateur MMA Debut
Watch Conor McGregor earn a vicious knockout in his first and only amateur MMA fight here.
Ciaran Campbell got a taste of Conor McGregor at Ring of Truth 6 in February 2007, and he didn't like it.
As it stands, the fight versus McGregor was Campbell's first and only foray into MMA, ending his career at 0-1 (amateur).
Thankfully for him, he can say he's only lost to one of the best in the world, as McGregor went on to unfathomable heights following that victory.
After knocking out Campbell, McGregor turned pro, rattling off back-to-back knockouts before stumbling via submission to kick off his professional career. Two more knockouts and another submission loss--this time to Joe Duffy--later, and the fun truly began.
McGregor notched 15 straight wins after his submission loss to Duffy--13 via knockout, one via submission, and one via decision--capturing the UFC featherweight title and becoming the sport's biggest star in the process.
But every career starts somewhere, and for McGregor, it kicked off at Ring of Truth 6 taking on Ciaran Campbell. What's perhaps most notable in this video is the obvious improvement of McGregor's game since 2007. He earns the knockout against Campbell, but his striking game is nowhere near as refined, polished, and slick as it is today.
McGregor will need to showcase another evolution in his next fight, as he's scheduled to face Floyd Mayweather Aug. 26 in his first professional boxing matchup.
For now, though, let's just admire McGregor's humble beginnings captured via the magic of YouTube and embedded below.
