Here's what went down live on FloCombat at Evolution Fighting Championship (EFC V) 5: Bad Blood.
Evolution Fighting Championship (EFC) stormed Wichita, Kansas, Saturday, May 13, bringing a stacked card live to FloCombat with EFC 5.
In the main event, viewers were treated to a classic "striker vs. grappler" matchup, as Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Joe Wilk faced kickboxing world-champion Marcio Navarro.
And just like we all expected, Navarro...submitted Wilk. After rocking his foe early, Navarro found himself on the mat with the grappling specialist, and he locked in the rear-naked choke in no time, forcing the tap. In his post fight interview, when asked if that's how he saw the fight going, Navarro kept it real.
"No. Not really," he said. "[In] MMA, that's not a black belt. That's not a kickboxing world champion. That's MMA...That doesn't mean I'm better than him at jiu-jitsu. It was just my night."
In the co-main event, Steven Nguyen rolled on, improving to 4-0 as a pro with a 16-second TKO of Jose Leyva. The fight was short and brutal, as Nguyen clipped Leyva early and didn't let up, forcing the referee to intervene in short order. After the fight, Nguyen claimed the EFC featherweight championship and emphatically declared his reign.
"This is my cage. My city. My belt," he said. "And I'm not going anywhere. 3-1-6 stand up, you have yourselves a champion now."
