Sam Alvey Reconsiders Callout Of Jack Marshman, Wants Krzysztof Jotko
UFC middleweight Sam Alvey is ready to set a record, and he has an opponent in mind for the event.
After picking up his fourth straight victory at UFC on Fox 23, many expected UFC middleweight Sam Alvey to set his sights on a big fight.
After hearing his name read out by Bruce Buffer announcing his 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous decision victory over Nate Marquardt, Alvey took the microphone for one of his customary post-fight victory speeches. He then proceeded to call out the man he wished to face next.
The name that came out his mouth was one few had predicted--UFC newcomer Jack Marshman. The Welshman beat Magnus Cedenblad in his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 99 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but with Alvey riding a winning streak like he is, many expected him to hone in on the top 15 of the UFC's middleweight division.
Having received some feedback about his callout from his fans, Alvey took to his podcast last evening and explained himself.
"I was torn," Alvey said. "Firstly, I was going to call out a couple of people, but they rushed me big time on the stage--they told me they only had time for one question. At that point I hadn't decided who I was going to call out, and he [Marshman] was the first name I mentioned.
"The reason he was a notable mention, if not the official call out, was because he's young in the UFC, he's 1-0 and he beat the guy I wanted to call out [Cedenblad]. If you look at his record, he's got like 22 wins, 3 losses and almost all of his wins are via knockout--he's a banger."
Alvey then revealed who he probably would've picked if he had longer to collect his thoughts after defeating Marquardt.
"Had they given me longer to think about it, I probably would've gone with [Krzysztof] Jotko," Alvey said. "I still don't know if I'm saying his name right. I didn't know if it was a soft 'J' or not and I didn't want to be that guy that calls someone out and says their name wrong.
"I'll take whoever, whenever. Jotko would be a bigger fight. He's ranked 13 or 14 right now--he beat Thales Leites, he destroyed Thales Leites. So yeah, I'd love to fight Jotko. I think in March it'd be a really fun fight. We both have about as many knockouts as one another. I've got a few more wins in the UFC, but it could be a fun fight. If I had more than a second, then I think I would've called out Jotko."
If Alvey does get another fight in before June, he will set a record as the most active UFC fighter ever in any 12-month period. Suffice to say, he's hellbent on taking the record and is ready to jump back in the Octagon on just four weeks' notice.
"Realistically I'm hoping I can get on the Brazil card," Alvey said, referring to the UFC Fight Night card in Fortaleza, Brazil, March 11. "The UFC have only announced five fights for that card, so I'd love to be number six.
"We're going to hit up the UFC any day now. With my fight the other night I tied the record--I'm tied with Donald Cerrone, Neil Magny and Roger Huerta for most fights in the UFC in one year's time. If I get one more fight before June 18, I set the record."
