ACB 50 Results: Golstov Wins, Cooper Shocks the World
BAMMA 27, Bellator 169 and UFC Sacramento got the weekend of MMA off to a great start, but last evening Absolute Championship Berkut really put the cherry on top of the cake with a terrific night of action in St Petersburg, Russia.

The 12-strong fight card featured world class fighters from all over the world and with four title fights finishing off the night there was no lack of talking points after it was all said and done.

Denis Golstov wins the ACB heavyweight title

In the main event, the ACB heavyweight champion Salimgerey Rasulov faced Denis Goltsov in a fight that no one ever thought would go the five championship rounds.

Golstov had a significant reach and height advantage over the champion and he looked to use it as his main weapon from outset mixing up both kicks and punches at range.

Rounds one and two flew by with the challenger keeping Rasulov at distance and avoiding his rare counter power shots. Golstov continued this pattern into round three, using his jab to push Rasulov on the back foot and using all manner of kicks to work away at his body.

With three rounds likely in the bag, the challenger then started to take his foot off the gas in the fourth and fifth as the paced slowed along with the output of both men.

In the final minutes of the fight the champion chased a finish but as he poured forward Golstov rallied back himself with jabs and a massive head kick that Rasulov ate well.

With one minute to go, referee Marc Goddard brought the action back to the center of the cage for a final throw down but even then the champion just continued to eat Golstov’s jab.

After twenty-five minutes the judges gave their decision and the hometown man Denis Golstov was announced the new ACB heavyweight champion via unanimous decision.

Brett Cooper rallies back to win the ACB welterweight title

In the co-main event, American Brett Cooper took on Russian Aslambek Saidov for the vacant ACB welterweight title in what turned out to be one of the upsets of the evening.

After surviving two rounds of relentless pressure and taking some big heavy blows, the former Bellator fighter Cooper silenced the Russian crowd in the third round getting a somewhat controversial stoppage.

Saidov had dominated the entire contest landing some vicious elbows and using his strength to bully Cooper around the cage. The end looked nigh for the American, but upset came one minute into the third when out of nowhere landed a big counter right to send the Russian staggering back into the cage.

Saidov appeared to be defending his follow up barrage of strikes well, but the referee Leo Roberts called a stop to the action. The Russian disputed the call immediately, but there was nothing he could do about it.

Brett Cooper is the new ACB welterweight champion.

Magomed Magomedov retains his bantamweight title

The third title of the evening saw the ACB bantamweight title put on the line with champion Magomed Magomedov defending against Oleg Borisov.
The fight didn’t follow the pattern of the rest of the evening and lacked action as both men cancelled each other both on the feet and in the grappling.

After three uneventful rounds, the champion Magomedov locked in guillotine choke out of nowhere with the clock downing in the final minute of the fourth. Magomedov’s win opens up the possibility of a rematch with Petr Yan in 2017.

Experience beats youth as Balayev beats Raisov

The title fight action began with the vacant ACB featherweight title on the line as 21 year-old Yusuf Raisov faced 40 year-old Marat Balayev.

Many expected it would be the young lion taking the fight to the veteran, however what transpired was totally the opposite. Balayev dominated the fight from start to finish, easily winning every round and using all his experience to beat Raisov in every department.

Raisov had one close moment in the fifth when he nearly locked in a triangle, but Balayev managed to wriggle out and ended the fight as he started—on top, in control and reigning down ground and pound.

The fight went the distance but there was only one winner—the hometown hero Marat Balayev is the new ACB featherweight champion.

Tough night at the office for Ed Arthur and Jake Bostwick

British bantamweight Ed Arthur is known for his brave performances and no quit attitude and last evening he needed every bit of courage he could muster against a very game Tural Ragimov.

The Russian’s tactics were obvious from the outset—close the distance, get Arthur down to the mat and work away.

Unfortunately for Arthur, it was tactic that proved successful in all three rounds as Ragimov took him down time after time and worked away on him with vicious ground and pound. The Brit had a moment in the first round where he stunned Ragimov on the feet, but the Russian recovered and Arthur was on his back once again and proceeded to dominate the rest of the fight.

After 15-minutes the judge’s decision was academic and there were no surprises on the scorecards. The unanimous decision rightfully went to the Russian.
Arthur’s loss was unfortunately a sign of things to come for the British fighters as middleweight Jake Bostwick later suffered a first round knockout defeat against Aleksei Butorin.

Butorin was aggressive from the outset and pushed Bostwick’s back against the cage after just two minutes. From there, the Russian unloaded a stiff kick to the liver and then followed up with a devastating right hook to send the Bostwick unconscious to the mat and bringing the fight to a brutal conclusion.
