SUG 2: Miesha Tate's Top 5 Career Submissions
Miesha Tate faces Jessica Eye Dec. 11 at Submission Underground 2. Relive her top-five career submissions here.
Conor McGregor dominated the headlines after UFC 205, but one of the biggest shocks coming out of that memorable evening was the announcement that Miesha Tate would be retiring from mixed martial arts.
While we may not be seeing Tate back in the Octagon, it won't take long for to be back competing within the confines of a cage when she faces Jessica Eye at Submission Underground 2 next month.
Here are Tate's 5 best submission wins during her MMA career.
Tate's Strikeforce: Challengers debut came in March 2010 when she faced Zoila Frausto Gurgel in Fresno, California.
After a dominant opening nine minutes where Tate mostly dominated in top control, the American finally got the victory when she transitioned into an armbar.
The undefeated Gurgel did everything she could to get out the submission, but Tate wasn't letting go. With four minutes and nine seconds on the clock in the second, Gurgel tapped and Tate had her first Strikeforce Challengers win.
Before entering the big leagues of Strikeforce or UFC, Tate did the rounds on the U.S. regional circuit. This fight in Shawnee, Oklahoma, was in Freestyle Cage Fighting 30.
Tate took Carreriro down in every round and used a variety of ground and pound and submission attempts to wear her opponent down.
After almost 13 minutes of relentless pressure in top control, enough was enough. Tate dug her shoulder into the neck of Carreiro and used her body weight to starve her of oxygen using the dreaded Von Flue choke. Carreiro had no option but to tap.
Tate won the Strikeforce title in 2011 when she defeated Marloes Coenen for the bantamweight gold.
Coming into the fight, Tate talked a big game, saying that she was going to "make the referee fearful for her [Coenen's] life."
Coenen was known for her jiu-jitsu pedigree and had never been submitted in a mixed martial arts bout. That all changed in the fourth round when Tate wrestled Coenen down to the mat and worked beautifully into position to lock in an arm-triangle choke.
Coenen did her best to wriggle out, but the submission only got tighter. Eventually, the Dutchwoman tapped, and Tate had her first Strikeforce championship.
Having lost her Strikeforce title to Ronda Rousey in her prior fight, Tate's return was one that really tested her resolve.
Tate faced Julie Kedzie at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman on August 18, 2012, in what as a classic striker-versus-grappler matchup.
Anyone thinking that Tate's hunger would've taken a hit after losing her title was to be proven sorely wrong. Tate endured two head kicks and was knocked down twice in a highly entertaining affair.
After battling through this early trouble, Tate subdued Kedzie with a fight-ending armbar in the third round to get the tap and the victory.
No other submission could've possibly topped the list.
Tate's rear-naked choke victory over Holly Holm at UFC 196 meant she fulfilled her career-long ambition of one day lifting the UFC women's bantamweight title.
The victory was as dramatic as it was entertaining, with the two women going at it in a five-round, back-and-forth war at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Just when the fight looked to be slipping away from Tate, she ducked under an advancing Holm and wrestled her down to the mat. From there Tate sunk in a rear-naked choke, and being the warrior she was, Holm decided to "go out" rather than tap out.
Tate lifted the UFC women's bantamweight title in what turned to be her the best night of her career.
