Boxing on TV: Your Guide to Gevor vs. Simmons and the Weekend in Boxing
Your weekly television guide to the sweet science. FloBoxing looks at each card scheduled for American television to tell viewers what's worth watching and who will win--and why.
There is a lot of boxing on television. That's a good thing. Unfortunately, unless you're a hardcore fan, it's likely fisticuffs between random strangers -- violence without context or meaning.
That's where we come in at FloBoxing. What follows is a rundown of every boxing event on American TV this weekend. Our weekly TV guide is here to let you know what's worth watching and which fighters are heroes and which are zeroes. We also endeavor to tell you who will win--and why.
Noel Gevor (21-0, 10 KOs) vs. Stephen Simmons (15-1, 7 KOs)
KEY INFO
Date: Friday, October 14
Network: FloBoxing.tv
Promoter: Sauerland
Undercard bouts: Abel Gevor (11-0) vs. Alexander Hagen (9-1), Sebastian Formella (13-0) vs. Chiekh Dioum (8-0-1)
Interest Level: Medium
Start the weekend out right with the best overall card right here on FloBoxing. The WBO International title will be at stake between the No. 2-ranked Gevor and the face-first brawler Simmons. Should be interesting! We cover the event in more detail here.
Main Event Prediction: Noel Gevor by Unanimous Decision
KEY INFO
Date: Friday, October 14
Network: UniMas
Promoter: Top Rank
Undercard bouts: Egidijus Kavaliauskas (14-0) vs. Cameron Kreal (8-11-2)
Interest Level: Medium
Jose Felix Jr. is staying very busy, and he's not just beating up random tomato cans. Alan Herrera has reached the "Get Beat Up And Quit On Stool" portion of his career, but he does have 33 wins and a decent KO ratio. This is a very reasonable test of Felix's skills and should be a pretty interesting fight.
While it's fair to look at Felix Jr. in very suspect fashion, he's on the cusp of another high-profile fight. A win over Herrera might be the thing that gets him to the B-side of an HBO or Showtime showcase.
Main Event Prediction: Jose Felix Jr. by Fifth-Round KO
KEY INFO
Date: Friday, October 14
Network: Telemundo
Promoter: All Star Boxing
Undercard bouts: TBD
Interest Level: Low
Ricardo Rodriguez attempts to avenge his loss against David Quijano from earlier this year on Telemundo. Quijano is no great shakes, but he won all three cards by the same 8-2 margin in their first fight. The light-hitting Rodriguez is going to have to make some drastic changes if he expects a different outcome this time.
Main Event Prediction: David Quijano by Majority Decision
Anabel Ortiz (22-3, 4 KOs) vs. Debora Rengifo (7-2-1, 3 KOs)
KEY INFO
Date: Saturday, October 15
Network: beIN Sports
Promoter: Zanfer Promotions
Undercard bouts: Jorge Paez Jr. (39-8-2) vs, Johnny Navarrete (32-8-1), Tomoki Kameda (31-2) vs, Cecilio Santos (31-30-6)
Interest Level: Medium
The action on the undercard is what makes this show for me: Tomoki Kameda had a couple excellent fights with Jaime McDonnell in losing efforts, and I'm happy to see him back after a year off doing whatever it was he did (waiting for a call from Al Haymon?)
Johnny Navarette and Jorge Paez Jr. are both pretty much shot, but it should be a competitive slug fest. The main event stars Mexico's biggest female boxing star, Anabel Ortiz. She's not fighting anyone good, and you shouldn't expect anything other than a wide 10-round decision, but the fans in Iztapalapa should be happy.
Main Event Prediction: Anabel Ortiz by Unanimous Decision
KEY INFO
Date: Saturday, October 15
Network: TyC Sports
Promoter: Edgardo Morresi
Undercard bouts: Nothing good
Interest Level: Low
Breilor Teran has no significant wins outside the borders of Venezuela and Colombia, and given where the fight is taking place and his record, he seems clearly positioned to lose here, too. You couldn't pay me to spend my Saturday night watching this live.
Main Event Prediction: David Esperante by Unanimous Decision.
