Pittsburgh's premier MMA organization, Pinnacle Fighting Championships, brought the heat Friday evening with Pinnacle Fighting Championships 14.
Boasting a stacked card featuring some of the greater Pittsburgh area's finest talent in Dominic Mazzotta and Mark Cherico, the card brought the Syria Shriners Center to its feet early and often.
Mazzotta, the Pinnacle FC bantamweight and featherweight champion, looked primed to make a run at the UFC with another victory. At 10-1--with his only defeat coming to UFC star Cody Garbrandt--Mazzotta has blitzed the Pittsburgh MMA scene since his pro debut in January 2013. Taking on Bellator MMA veteran Keith Richardson at Pinnacle FC 14, Mazzotta faced a tough test.
And he passed with style.
After opening up a massive cut on Richardson in Round 1, Mazzotta found the fight-ending submission in Round 2 via power guillotine. Richardson, refusing to tap, fell unconscious, and referee Chip Snyder halted the bout.
In dominating both the standup and the ground game, Mazzotta is undoubtedly right back on the UFC's radar. He's won eight straight, seven via submission.
Cherico, meanwhile, put on a classic performance against the game D'Juan Owens.
Known for his smothering ground attack, Cherico displayed the skills that earned him the Pinnacle FC featherweight title in all their glory. Using his strikes to set up the takedown, Cherico grounded Owens for the majority of their match and battered him with ground-and-pound.
Rounding out the pro card, Evolve MMA's Devonte Smith moved his record to 4-0, notching his fourth knockout victory in as many outings. His opponent, Xavier Nash, frustrated him with takedowns early, but Smith weathered the storm and roared back in Round 3, catching his foe with a ferocious 1-2 that sent them tumbling to the canvas, where the deed was sealed with some ground-and-pound.
In the featured amateur bout, Anthony Romero put on a clinic against Mike Walters, having his way with his pinpoint striking and calculated ground attack. It was a complete showing for the 19-year-old Romero, and he'll take the Pinnacle FC amateur lightweight title home with him for his efforts.
