Boxing TV Guide: Running Down a Lousy Weekend in Boxing
Boxing TV Guide: Running Down a Lousy Weekend in Boxing
Normally I spend the bulk of this TV Guide trying to sell you on fighters you've never heard of. But I just can't do it this week. It's a lousy weekend of boxing.
Normally I spend the bulk of this column trying to sell you on fighters you've never heard of. But I just can't do it this week. It's a lousy weekend of fights and there's just no getting around it.
Of course, for the truly addicted, that doesn't really matter. You're looking for a violence fix and you're looking for it STAT. I've got your hook up--holler if you hear me.
As always, FloBoxing takes a look at every card on American television, to tell you what's worth watching and who will win--an why. This week the answers are "nothing much" and "who really knows?" But let's give it a shot anyway.
Amos Cowart (11-1, 9 KOs) vs. Nick DeLomba (10-1, 1 KOs)
Key Info
Date: September 1st
Network: Gofightlive.tv ($14.99)
Promoter: DiBella Entertainment
Undercard bouts: Dardan Zenunaj (12-1) vs. Jose Salinas (9-2-1) and a host of other bouts
Interest Level: Low
The venue change here is more interesting than the fight: The NYSAC recently made it a requirement for promoters in the state to have appreciably more insurance for fighters than ever before. As a result, this fight from the "Broadway Boxing" series is now taking place on a reservation in Connecticut. Because of course it is.
Cowart was tooled by an excellent prospect in Regis Prograis, but his record suggests he's capable of punching a little. DeLomba is the local ticket seller, but also a guy who was once KO'ed in a single round. Ergo...
Main Event Prediction: Amos Cowart by 2nd Round KO
Antonio Gutierrez (20-2-1, 9 KOs) vs. Jorge Melendez (29-6-1, 27 KOs)
Key Info
Date: September 2nd
Network: Estrella TV/ringtv.craveonline.com
Promoter: Golden Boy Promotions
Undercard bouts: Christian Gonzalez (14-0) vs. Jonathan Corrales (8-3-2)
Interest Level: Medium
Golden Boy has managed to resuscitate the moribund Fight Club Live series by offering something fans have long been asking for--regular action fights. Neither Gutierrez nor Melendez is a future superstar in the sport. Yet, this is a compelling matchup since both men are flawed in ways that will benefit the viewer. Good work from Oscar's matchmaking crew putting this together.
Main Event Prediction: Jorge Melendez by 5th Round KO
Darwin Price (10-0, 5 KOs) vs. Daevonte Starks (13-1, 7 KOs)
Key Info
Date: September 3rd
Network: NBC Sports Network
Promoter: Leija Battah Promotions
Undercard bouts: Rickey Edwards (11-0) vs. Kent Cruz (10-0)
Interest Level: Low
The headliner for this show would likely be the opener on most episodes of ShoBox. That's not a compliment. This is just not a good card--I won't waste your time pretending otherwise.
Main Event Prediction: Darwin Price by Unanimous Decision
Julian Ariste (31-6, 16 KOs) vs. Alan Castillo (18-4, 8 KOs)
Key Info
Date: September 3rd
Network: TyC Sports
Promoter: Edgardo Rosani Morresi
Undercard bouts: Bryan Zarza (13-1-2) vs. Damian Yapur (11-4-2), Elias Araujo (11-0) vs. Ruben Lopez (9-8-3)
Interest Level: Low
This is a regional title fight between two Argentine super bantamweights clearly operating as domestic level B-sides within their own country. Look on the brightside here--they may not be any good, but at least they're evenly matched up. Neither is that great a mystery (plenty of tape on both from this same network) and I think it's clear Ariste is the better fighter. If Castillo wins, it is a function of heart and determination triumphing over skill. In this instance, bet on skill.
Main Event Prediction: Julian Ariste by Unanimous Decision
