Boxing TV Guide: Robert Guerrero Fights But Solo Boxeo Will Steal the Show
Boxing TV Guide: Robert Guerrero Fights But Solo Boxeo Will Steal the Show
Your complete guide to this weekend's boxing television. Robert Guerrero headlines on Spike TV but Top Rank's Solo Boxeo may steal the show on UniMas.
If boxing was a sport, Robert Guerrero would have been cut last year, a reminder that even the most beloved athletes must pay homage to father time. But boxing lacks that purity--it exists in the netherworld between athletics and entertainment, where a name can carry a husk of into the ring long after his body has told him he doesn't belong there anymore.
No one has to sell football. When a player, even a superstar like Peyton Manning, can no longer perform, he's tossed to the curb. Winning is paramount and anything that gets in the way of victory is discarded.
Boxing, however, has to be sold. Old limp-armed Manning would be in the ring for ages to come if he were a pugilist, fans and promoters pretending not to be embarrassed by progressively weaker competition. And, so, you get Robert Guerrero on PBC.
Guerrero is no Manning--but he has a name from the Floyd Mayweather fight and he's hittable and exciting to watch. He's not an elite boxer anymore, if he ever was, but that's kind of beside the point. Some people might stop on Spike TV if they see his name. That's all that matters.
Guerrero isn't the only fighter competing this weekend, but he's likely the only headliner you've ever heard of. That's why we are here. We'll tell you what's worth watching and who will win--and why in this weekly feature at FloBoxing.
Carolina Raquel Duer (18-3-1, 5 KOs) vs. Aline de Cassia Scaranello (10-4, 8 KO)
Key Info
Date: August 26th
Network: TyC Sports (can be found on DirecTV)
Promoter: Sergio Rodriguez
Undercard bouts: You've never heard of the headliners and you've never heard of the undercard fighters either
Interest Level: High! No, wait. The opposite of high!
With just two cards on Saturday, we have to search a bit to find anything else on the schedule worth your attention. I guess this card, held at a venue that roughly translates to "Sports and Social Club of the Future" in rollicking Buenos Aires, counts.
There's an IBF world title on the line in the deep female bantamweight division. Scaranello has fought in Argentina before and lost every single round in a bout for a belt in a lighter weight class, That's not a good indicator of success here. Duer is of Jewish heritage and has some racy looking shots on the internet to stare at if that's your thing. That's the extent of what I know about this fight. Given the records of those involved and where the fight is located, I'm willing to go out on a limb and pick the winner.
Main Event Prediction: Carolina Raquel Duer by Unanimous Decision
Robert Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) vs. David Peralta (25-2-1, 14 KOs)
Key Info
Date: August 27th
Network: Spike TV
Promoter: TGB Promotions/Haymon Boxing
Undercard bouts: Alfredo Angulo (24-5) vs. Freddy Hernandez (33-8), Terrell Gausha (18-0) vs. Steve Martinez (16-2)
Interest Level: Medium
It has been two years since Robert Guerrero looked like a world class fighter who deserves to be headining TV cards. It's been nearly four years since his career best victory against Andre Berto. As discussed above, that only matters if people start forgetting his name.
David Peralta was dug up from the depths of some Boxrec list to get him someone with a reasonable looking record who offered as little actual resistance as possible. I'm sure Peralta will try for a few rounds before giving up, but he will give up.
On the undercard, Terrell Gausha gets a reasonable step up against a big welterweight in Steven Martinez--Gausha likely hasn't seen a guy this big, much less one that can fight.
There's also a great garbage fight in the co-feature. Alfredo Angulo has looked generally spent, but there's an off chance he found something after a year off. He might need it with Freddy Hernandez, a well traveled gatekeeper with wins over the like of Chop Chop Corley, Mike Anchondo, and Luis Collazo.
Main Event Prediction: Robert Guerrero by 6th Round KO
Miguel Marriaga (23-1, 19 KOs) vs. Guy Robb (18-1, 8 KOs)
Key Info
Date: August 27th
Network: UniMas
Promoter: Top Rank
Undercard bouts: Jose Felix Jr. (33-1-1) vs. Robert Frankel (34-16-1)
Interest Level: Medium
For a change of pace, Top Rank and Solo Boxeo actually have the best card this weekend. Headlining is a minor title fight between a Southern California prospect with a generic name and a Colombian puncher who actually might not be a fraud.
Marriaga didn't look terribly good against Nicholas Walters when they appeared against one another last year on HBO, but Guy Robb also has an L suffered at the hands of Joel Diaz Jr. via 7th round KO. That means this isn't a fight of elite men--these are guys who are seeking B+ status in a sport where that can sometimes be enough to make you a champion.
On the undercard, Jose Felix Jr. has a glitzy looking record but is just mediocre enough that he might struggle with Robert Frankel a little.
Main Event Prediction: Guy Robb by Unanimous Decision
