Colby Covington--who is mentioned in the tweet--is a teammate of Brooks' at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida. Covington is currently scheduled to face Max Griffin at UFC 202 Aug. 20 in Las Vegas.
The man Brooks wants, Barboza (18-4), most recently earned a dominant decision win over former Strikeforce and WEC champion Gilbert Melendez at UFC on FOX 20. This marked Barboza's second straight win over a former champion. He previously earned a decision victory over former UFC champ Anthony Pettis at UFC 197 in April.
Brooks (19-1) was last seen picking up his own decision win in his UFC debut against longtime veteran Ross Pearson at The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale earlier this month. This came just a few weeks after it was announced he had parted ways from Bellator MMA after spending three years as a member of their 155-pound division. During his tenure with Bellator, Brooks won the Season 9 lightweight tournament with decisions over John Alessio, Alexander Sarnavskiy while also avenging his lone professional loss to Saad Awad.
Following this victory, Brooks was eventually named the replacement for the then-injured champion Eddie Alvarez against Michael Chandler in May 2015. Brooks would go on to earn the close split-decision win over the heavily favored Chandler, earning the promotion's interim title in the process.
Then, Alvarez made the transition over to the UFC, forcing Bellator to book the immediate rematch between Brooks and Chandler for the vacant lightweight title. Brooks would end up defeating Chandler by fourth-round TKO, claiming the undisputed title in the process.
Brooks defended his belt against Marcin Held and Dave Jansen before before leaving the promotion.
The Portland card Brooks references marks the UFC's first journey into Oregon since UFC 102 in 2009, where fans saw "Minotauro" Nogueira earned a thrilling victory over fellow Hall of Famer Randy Couture.
