Nate Diaz famously quips "Everybody is on steroids" when asked about performance-enhancing drug use in MMA. But last evening during an interview with Jason Whitlock on Fox Sports, Diaz elaborated, giving. an interesting view on the state of PED use inside the sport.
"A lot of the fighters are saying what they think people want to hear and then doing their real sh*t," Diaz said. "You get what you see with me though, and these guys are supposed to be scholars and good straight-edge people, and this is happening [Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones PED citations] and it's mind-blowing. If you just say you are doing it from the beginning, no one will be surprised."
That said, Diaz believes the blame falls on the fighters, not the UFC itself.
"I don't think the UFC has any [PED] problem, I think it's these people who are fighting in it [the UFC]," he continued. "You know, they are doing what they are doing. It's whatever."
Whitlock then asked Diaz about the critics who had lambasted Conor McGregor for requesting a rematch with him. Surprisingly, Diaz somewhat defended the Irishman.
"If you don't want to fight a guy who beat you or show that you're better than the guy everybody thinks is better than you, then I don't know what you're in this sport for," Diaz said. "Because that's what I'm in it for. That's what I was in it for in the beginning--to let everyone know I'm the baddest dude there is. That I'm the baddest [expletive] there is."
Diaz then later appeared on set with Conan O'Brien, where he was played a recorded message McGregor had sent in earlier in the day. Suffice to say, McGregor was his typical brash self.
"I just hope he's not up on that stage wearing that stupid black t-shirt he's never out of," McGregor said in the video. "The boy has been wearing that same damn t-shirt for the past 20 years or something."
Then, McGregor dished on the upcoming rematch with Diaz at UFC 202 in August.
"I'm taking this contest very, very seriously," McGregor said. "I've flown in specific body types to replicate Nate's skinny-tall frame. The boy won the lotto last time, he knows it, I know it. Well, August 20, I get my revenge, and I look forward to it.
Diaz responded in typical fashion by unbuttoning his jacket to reveal his signature black t-shirt and then dropping a zinger.
"The truth came out--and it's coming again," he said. "The truth will be on August 20th when it goes down again."
