New information has come to light on what caused Jon Jones to be flagged by USADA and pulled from his rematch against Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.
The Nevada State Athletic commission confirmed the substances in Jones' system were hydroxy-clomiphene and letrozole metabolite. Both are estrogen blockers banned year-round by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The commission released the information at a public hearing and the news was initially reported by MMAJunkie.com.
Estrogen blockers are often used in conjunction with performance enhancing drugs to offset the influx of testosterone and restart the body's natural production of the hormone.
There was also a temporary suspension placed on Jones' license to compete until a formal hearing can be held later this year. The former light heavyweight champion has retained the legal services of Howard Jacobs, who has represented fighters facing doping violations.
Jones' failed drug test is the latest incident in a long-running string of missteps by the embattled star. The 28-year-old pound-for-pound great was stripped of his title and given a one-year suspension for numerous violations stemming from a hit-and-run in New Mexico.
Jones returned from his suspension by defeating Ovince Saint Preux via unanimous decision at UFC 197 back in April. His win over Saint Preux cleared the way for a long-awaited rematch with Cormier to materialize. The two rivals were set to handle their business in the main event of UFC 200, but Jones' violation forced his removal three days out from the event.
