Submission Underground invaded Portland, Ore., Sunday, July 17. The results were stellar.
All eyes in the combat sports world were on Submission Underground Sunday night in Portland, Ore.
Former UFC two-division title challenger Chael Sonnen launched the inaugural event of his submission grappling promotion with a card stacked that featured a diverse list of high-profile talent. Former champions from jiu-jitsu and MMA alike stepped into "The Slammer" to handle business, and the debut showing from Submission Underground certainly delivered.
Former finalist on The Ultimate Fighter and lauded grappler Vinny Magalhaes dealt with his fair share of twists and turns on the road to Portland. Magalhaes was initially slated to square off with Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, but the Bellator star was forced out of action with a neck injury.
Ronny Markes took the short notice call, and stepped in to face the former world champion submission artist. Magalhaes overcame adversity in the lead up and that trend continued against Markes.
The bout was a back-and-forth affair from the jump, and Magalhaes appeared to be in trouble when Markes snatched his leg. Nevertheless, Magalhaes is as slick as they come and caught a heel hook of his own that forced Markes to tap.
