Chris Weidman Neck Surgery Update, Timeline for UFC Return
Chris Weidman underwent successful neck surgery and could potentially return for the UFC's debut event in New York.
Chris Weidman underwent successful neck surgery Wednesday in New York.
MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani reported the news, adding that the Weidman returned home the night of the surgery. Dr. K. Daniel Riew performed the procedure.
Weidman told Helwani he'll begin physical therapy and strength training Thursday. Should everything go according to plan, Weidman believes he'll resume hard sparring in six weeks.
For his next fight, Weidman is targeting a Nov. 12 date at UFC 205, the UFC's inaugural trip to New York. Weidman, an Empire State native, has long called for the chance to fight in his home state. With the UFC coming to Madison Square Garden in November, he may receive his opportunity.
Weidman (13-1) is currently ranked No. 2 in the UFC's official middleweight rankings. He seized the middleweight title from Anderson Silva at UFC 162, knocking out "The Spider" with a left hook. From there, he notched three title defenses before losing the strap to Luke Rockhold via fourth-round TKO at UFC 194.
