Some things in life just aren’t meant to last long. A Melvin Manhoef fight is on that list.

When the renowned powerhouse steps into the cage the proverbial fireworks are all but guaranteed to follow, as Manhoef has built a career on his willingness to exchange with his opposition. Win, lose or draw, getting down to business is just what Manhoef does, and more of the same was expected when he faced Rafael Carvalho for championship gold in the main event at Bellator 155.

Nevertheless, MMA is an uncertain beast, and a fight that was figured by many to be a shootout for as long as it lasted, simply just lasted on Friday night.

For the first time in his 21-year, 51-fight career, Manhoef fought beyond the third round as the Dutch strike and Carvalho fumbled their way through a bout that had very little to feel good about. The two fighters were warned for their inactivity in the opening frame as a Manhoef kick was the only strike to land in the round.

The second round saw more activity than it’s predecessor, but it was of the sloppy variety as the champion was warned on multiple occasions for illegal strikes. A pair of low blows and an elbow thrown strike landed just as referee John McCarthy stepped in earned the Brazilian middleweight a stern talking to from the third man inside the cage. Yet, there was no point deduction, and the uninspired action continued.

The final 10 minutes would sludge by as Manhoef launched powerful strikes that missed their mark, while Carvalho did everything in his power to deny engagement. When the final bell sounded the crowd in Boise, Idaho unleashed one final chorus of disapproval as Carvalho retained his title with a questionable split decision victory on the judges' scorecards.

Longtime Bellator play-by-play ace Jimmy Smith Jr. summed up the confusion of the moment perfectly as he closed out the broadcast on Spike TV.

"It's my job to talk and I don't even know what to say."
