Anderson Silva is out of his UFC 198 bout opposite Uriah Hall.
UFC President Dana White confirmed the news Tuesday to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole. In his report, Iole noted that Silva felt abdominal discomfort ahead of his May 14 showdown and may require gallbladder surgery.
“Anderson developed abdominal discomfort [Monday and] further evaluation today is consistent with acute cholecystitis," UFC Medical Consultant Jeff Davidson told Yahoo Sports. "He will be seen by a surgeon today for possible surgery.”
The UFC has not yet indicated whether it will find a replacement opponent for Hall.
While the removal of the 41-year- old former champ deals a major blow to the UFC 198 card in Curitiba, Brazil, the event still features plenty of talent. The show is colloquially dubbed “The Brazilian UFC 200,” and for good reason.
The crowd will still be treated to several home-country legends, such as Fabricio Werdum, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Cris Cyborg, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Vitor Belfort, Demian Maia, and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
Werdum puts his heavyweight title on the line against Stipe Miocic in the night’s main event, while Jacare and Belfort face off in a potential number-one contender’s bout at middleweight. Also on the main card, Cyborg makes her UFC debut at a catchweight of 140 pounds against Leslie Smith.
