King Mo Plans to Introduce Phil Davis to "The Doom" at Bellator 154
Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal talks his upcoming bout with Phil Davis at Bellator 154
It’s always about business when it comes to Muhammed Lawal.
The charismatic enigma more commonly recognized as “King Mo” isn’t one to get caught up in distractions and media generated storylines. Instead, the former Strikeforce titleholder turned Bellator “Moneyweight” champion is more about about his personal grind and hustle, which is all aimed toward finding success inside the cage.
The fact the spotlight tends to follow Lawal wherever he goes plays well into his long term goals in MMA, but the short term focus is always locked on the task at hand. And currently fixed on his path is former UFC title contender Phil Davis.
Lawal and “Mr. Wonderful” are set to collide in the main event at Bellator 154 on May 14 in San Jose, California, in a bout that will feature two of the promotion’s most prominent names. Due to Lawal’s experience he can compartmentalize being an entertainer and competitor, and he’s adamant Davis is going to get everything the Tennessee native has to offer.
“I’m feeling good and ready for war,” Lawal said. “I know this is a big fight for Bellator but I honestly haven't been thinking about anything other than the job I have to do. Phil is a good grappler and wrestler, but I really don’t think he can hurt me with anything he has. I’m confident, and he’s confident, but I’m gonna go out there and bust him up."
When it comes to the aforementioned bust up, Lawal will be packing thunder. He’s nicknamed his right hand the “Doom” because of his proven ability to separate his opposition from their consciousness, and he has no intention of holding back in San Jose.
““[Davis] thinks he is ready for it but we’ll see,” Lawal said. “I think just because he fought in the UFC he believes he has one up on me. I’m going to show him it has nothing to do with anything but style, and my style is all wrong for him."
Over the course of his time competing in MMA the American Top Team representative has learned how to temper his tenacity to balance with his unique cerebral approach. Lawal is as game as they come in the fight business, and his willingness to adapt has allowed him convert experience into wisdom.
“My skill set is still growing and I’m learning as a fighter,” Lawal said. “When I first started out I would try to sprint the entire fight, but now, I realize it’s a calculated run. And that comes from experience. Now I know when to press hard and when to ease back a bit. I know when to push the gas pedal and when to let up. Everything’s coming together and I’m on point. I’m ready to go.”
And while King Mo the fighter may be taking center stage at Bellator 154, that doesn’t mean King Mo the entertainer has been silenced in the lead up to his bout with Davis.
“After I’m done with him I’ll have the royal guards carry him out of the cage....on a stretcher.”
