UFC 214: Jon Jones And Brian Ortega Pick Up Bonus Checks
Newly minted light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and grappling ace Brian Ortega earned bonuses at UFC 214.
The one thing the UFC absolutely rewards is a strong performance and does so at the tune of $50,000. There were a handful of solid showings on Saturday night at UFC 214, but none bigger than showing put on by the man widely regarded as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time in Jon Jones.
The former champion returned from a year on the shelf due to a USADA violation last July to not only defeat his greatest rival in Daniel Cormier, but do so in highlight reel fashion as the pound-for-pound great knocked out the former Olympian with a head kick in the third frame. Up until that point the AKA leader had found his groove and closed the distance between the two with ease as he landed big shots seemingly at will. Cormier looked very much in control of the fight right up until the point he wasn't.
Jones put his left shin on Cormier's head and it immediately put the reigning champion on wobbly legs. The Louisiana native attempted to retreat to safety, but Jones swarmed in with a flurry that put Cormier on the canvas. Once on the ground Jones opened up a barrage of heavy shots that made the referee step in and stop the fight.
By reclaiming the title that was previously stripped from him Jones stamped an impressive return, and could very well have slammed the door on a tumultuous period in the life of the 30-year-old superstar.
And where the GOAT picked up "Performance of the Night," the actual "Fight of the Night" took place on the undercard potion of the event in the form of a fast-paced dust up between Brian Ortega and Renato Moicano.
The two talents dove headlong into an all out scrap that saw each man have their fare share of success throughout the first two rounds. It was anyone's fight going into the final frame, and that's where "T-City" but his impressive grappling skills to use and locked down a fight-ending guillotine. And while it was a great showing from both men, Ortega's victory will continue to increase the already substantial hype surrounding the up-and-coming featherweight talent.
