UFC Eyeing Return To Stockholm, Sweden
The UFC are planning a return to Stockholm, Sweden in late spring 2017 following intial plans to go to Copenhagen, Denmark
Danish MMA fans look away now.
Rumors surfaced last month on Polish website MMAnews.pl that UFC would be heading to Copenhagen, Denmark for the first time on May 27, but it appears those plans have now changed.
Sources close to FloCombat last evening reported that UFC are now working on a date in late spring in Stockholm, Sweden and a return to the Ericsson Globe Arena for the first time since October 2014.
UFC haven’t been to Stockholm since January 2015 when Alexander Gustafsson took on Anthony Johnson at the Tele2 Arena. The Tele2 Arena was the second stadium event in UFC’s history and to this day remains their fourth highest attended show with 30,000 there to witness the twelve-strong fight card.
The last UFC event at the Ericsson Globe Arena in October 2014 was UFC Fight Night 53 which recorded an attendance of 10,026. The show was headlined by Gunnar Nelson taking on Rick Story and featured several other Nordic fighters including the likes of Akira Corassani, Ilir Latifi and Niklas Backstrom.
Prior to that event in 2014, the promotion held two other shows there in 2013 and 2012. Both those evenings drew significantly higher attendances with UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi vs. Latifi in 2013 recording an attendance of 14,506, and UFC on Fuel TV: Gustafsson vs. Silva in 2012 bringing in 15,428 fans.
Should the event be on the weekend of May 27-28, it will directly oppose the already announced KSW stadium show set to take place at the 58,000-seat National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland on the evening of May 27.
UFC are yet to make an official announcement about the event in the works, though details are expected as early as March when they return to Europe for UFC Fight Night 107 in London, England.
