It's not often that a Donald Cerrone fight flys under the radar but with the mayhem surrounding the Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor rematch this weekend, it's understandable why the Jackson-Winkeljohn man hasn't been much of a focus in the promotional build up.
Despite not getting much of the limelight, fans tuning in on Saturday night need no reminder that both Cerrone and his opponent Rick Story should put on a fierce contest. Both men have shown on multiple occasions they are willing to put it all on the line and with both men on winning streaks heading into the Octagon, neither will be short of confidence.
Ask Cerrone about the fight though and he wil tell you that Story isn't going to be much of a fight for him. Speaking earlier this week on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, Cerrone wasn't so complimentary about Story's skills inside the Octagon.
"Rick's a one-dimensional fighter man, he's got that old school mentality and he's just an old brawler," Cerrone said. "His wrestling against the cage is rudimentary and I'd like to say his Jiu Jitsu isn't really there at all. His striking is really just one looping punch overhand type of guy. It's a tailor-made fight for me to go out there and showcase my skills. I'll take him down if I want, push the pressure, knees, head kicks--it's all there."
"I'd rather stand and fight. It's not my game plan to take him down. I plan on Rock 'em Sock 'em Robot his a**."
Since being defeated by former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos last December, Cerrone has put two straight wins together in the welterweight division with impressive performances against Alex Oliveira and Patrick Cote.
While Cerrone has enjoyed his recent campaign at 170 pounds, he revealed that after this fight on Saturday night he will be moving back down to lightweight.
"I will be moving back down to 155 after this is all said and done," Cerrone said. "I'm going to take this fight right now and then go to 155 next and try to get to New York. I'm trying to get on New York at 55.
Ceronne then confirmed that it was UFC gold he had in mind and that he wanted to face a man he had already between once before--the UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.
While Cerrone wasn't afraid to share his ambition for later this year, he maintained that his sole focus this week was to get the job done on Saturday night and defeating Rick Story at the T-Mobile Arena.
"I'm not overlooking anybody," Cerrone said. "I'm just going out there to have fun you know that brother. You know I thoroughly enjoy what I do."
