Brock Lesnar, the mercurial former NCAA champion wrestler and UFC heavyweight champion, is returning to the Octagon at UFC 200.
The UFC announced the news during the UFC 199 broadcast. A commercial for UFC 200 was shown, and at the end, there was a smiling Lesnar.
Lesnar's opponent will be announced Monday on ESPN.
According to multiple FloCombat sources, the UFC's discussions with Lesnar about a potential return to the Octagon began earlier this year.
Lesnar has been training for the potential bout since WrestleMania 32 on April 3. He is still under contract to WWE, but WWE has given their blessing and will likely be involved in promoting the fight on their cable television shows and digital platforms.
Ever since he retired from the sport for a return to pro wrestling, Lesnar has felt he did not accomplish all he could have due to a near-deadly bout with diverticulitis. Those close to him have noted that Lesnar, an ultra competitive athlete, would likely live out the rest of his days with the nagging feeling that the illness prevented him from reaching his potential.
Lesnar had seemed to come to grips with his MMA career being over. He signed a new contract with World Wrestling Entertainment last year, and told ESPN that he was done fighting.
